Incoming Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the new state government plans to drop the New Economic Policy (NEP).
“The NEP is not part of the Constitution,” said the PKR secretary-general, although it is not clear whether a state government can dismiss what is after all a nationwide policy.
The decision, he added, came from all three partners of the coalition – PKR, PAS and DAP. “All three of us are of the same mindset.”
The agreement appears to stem from an effort by the opposition to soothe fears that a stronger PAS, could mean more conservative laws in the state. “By establishing such a government in Selangor, you can see how moderate we are, rather than speculating that we are hardline,” said PAS vice-president Hasan Ali.
